Ability wins over disability 4/8/2004

Good Samaritan Industries’ Lindsay Taylor, who recently achieved his lifetime goal of gaining formal engineering qualifications said, “I hope my achievement will give the message that having a disability doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your goals.”

Lindsay and his colleague Richard West have achieved their aspirations of improving their skills and career prospects thanks to an innovative partnership between Good Samaritan Industries and Swan TAFE.

Good Samaritan Industries’ Chief Executive Officer, Chris Jones said, “Working together, Good Samaritan Industries and Swan TAFE tailored Certificate 11 in Engineering so it could be carried out at our operations warehouse in Canning Vale”.

“It wasn’t always practical for Lindsay and Richard to attend TAFE during the day because of their work commitments  and the night courses were impractical because of transport difficulties.”

“An important aspect of the pilot program was to meet the course competencies without compromise,” said Chris.

“It was vital the students’ technical skills be able to withstand scrutiny in employment outside Good Samaritan Industries. Without question this has been successfully achieved.

“Their achievement is a credit to their hard work and dedication to reaching their full potential,” said Chris.

Good Samaritan Industries has modified the maintenance workshop for Lindsay, including the installation of concrete ramps and lowering of workable surfaces.

Lindsay said: “My main goal is to get into wrought iron work and completing Certificate11 in Engineering will help me achieve this”.

“I hope my achievement will give the message that just because a person has a disability, it doesn’t mean they can’t do what an able bodied person can do,” said Lindsay.

Richard, who is a waterskiing champion, said he did the training to improve his skills so he can learn how to make water-skis for people with a disability.

Good Samaritan Industries is an agency of UnitingCare, established in 1958 to provide training and employment to people with a disability.

Next Retail Training starts soon 2/3/2004

Looking to start a career in retail? Good Samaritan Industries' Retail Training Program for unemployed people with a disability is set to commence in March, thanks to a generous grant from United Way. The six month course in Certificates 1 & II in Retail Operations aims to improve job prospects for 10 unemployed people with a disability who wish to work in the retail industry. Trainees will learn the tools of the trade including customer service and communication, safe working practices and operating retail equipment. Most of the training is conducted 'on-the-job' at Good Sammy's specialised Training Store at Canning Vale, plus there are retail visits and mentoring opportunities. At the completion of the program, Good Samaritan Industries can also help participants find work - most of our past graduates are now working in the retail industry, or use the course as a springboard to other work. This program would not be possible without the generous support of United Way - thank you! If you are interested in pursuing a career in retail and would like to find out more about the training course, please contact Training and Development Manager, Beverley Herne on 9463 0500. Warehouse Training Good Samaritan Industries' application to provide Transport and Distribution Warehousing and Storage training has been approved by the Training Accreditation Council of Western Australia. Training and Development Manager Bev Herne said: "This gives Good Samaritan Industries the scope to deliver Certificates I and II in Transport and Distribution in-house to employees as well as provide training and assessment for unemployed people with a disability. For those students who wish to progress to Certificate III in Transport and Distribution, training and assessment will be delivered by the West Coast College of TAFE in partnership with Good Samaritan Industries."

Operation Santa gets the goods 2/3/2004

Thanks to our generous customers and supporters who made Operation Santa a huge success - helping over 500 families in need at Christmas. Operation Santa boxes were placed in all Good Sammy stores to collect goods and food to make up special hampers for families in need. The project is an initiative of Wesley Mission Perth to help parents provide a truly joyful Christmas for their children. A particular thanks to Sealcorp, who donated hundreds of great toys to this very worthy cause.

Funding for our future 2/3/2004

In the past, Good Samaritan Industries has not relied on fundraising to generate revenue to cover costs, unlike most not-for-profit organisations. Our commercial division, Good Sammy, has generated enough income through the sale of donated goods and clothing to support our operations and our mission.

However, in recent years the quality of donated goods and clothing has declined significantly and many new not-for-profit organisations have entered the recycled goods market, spreading the public's donations across many worthy causes. A number of new discount retailers have also entered the market. Adding to this are the new pressures of government funding changes and rising operational costs.

These changes mean that Good Samaritan Industries must look at additional sources of revenue to fund new equipment, training and employment programs. Over the next year, the Commercial Division will introduce a number of fundraising initiatives that will help sustain the organisations employment and training programs.

FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES
Two new fundraising initiatives will be introduced in 2004: the Friends of Good Samaritan Industries and a bequest program.

Friends of Good Samaritan Industries
Would you like to be a Friend of Good Samaritan Industries?
Good Samaritan Industries would like to introduce our Friends program and is looking for motivated people who are able to contribute their time and energy to help us continue our mission of providing employment choices for people with a disability.

There are a multitude of ways in which you can support the work of the organisation and become one of The Friends of Good Samaritan Industries.
*Run a donations drive with your friends, workmates or classmates.
Organise fundraising events for us with your club or workplace during the year, such as raffles, movie nights and auctions.
*Promote Good Samaritan Industries by distributing leaflets at any events you are involved in, encouraging people you know to come for a tour of our warehouse to find out more about us, and promoting our commercial services to business associates.
* Become a bin buddy to help us maintain our donation bin sites in your area and let us know if bins are overflowing or have been vandalized or graffitied.
*Other suggestions are welcome!

What does it mean to be a Friend of Good Samaritan Industries?
You will be invited to activities and events including store openings, open days, launches and any fundraising events.  You will also be invited to 'Friends only' events to share ideas, celebrate successes and of course have some fun! And you'll feel great being involved with a good cause!

To keep you in the picture, we will also send you our quarterly INSIGHT newsletter which includes articles on the achievements and activities of The Friends of Good Samaritan Industries.

Bequests
Long time supporters of Good Samaritan Industries can help fund much needed training programs and infrastructure by making a bequest to the organisation. A bequest can include a specific amount of money, a specific asset (i.e. property or art), or a percentage or fraction of a person's estate.

Previous gifts have enabled us to build our state of the art Good Samaritan Industries Training Facility and introduce the annual achievements award to recognise staff with a disability.

If you'd like to hear more about how you can be a Friend of Good Samaritan Industries, or making a bequest, please contact Jade McDonald on 9463 0537.
